In 2015, Donnie is in Tijuana, preparing for his fight in an amateur boxing bout hosted in a bar. Upon returning from his latest fight, Donnie resigns from the Smith Boardley Financial Group to pursue his dream of becoming a professional boxer. Donnie auditions at Los Angeles’ elite Delphi Boxing Academy, managed by family friend Tony “Little Duke” Evers Jr., the son of Apollo’s trainer Tony “Duke” Evers, but is turned down.
When it appears that the branch will be closing in “The Merger,” Lancome makeup lists all of the office equipment on Craigslist and can be seen throughout the episode selling printers and computers illegally. Upon learning that the branch will not be closing, he uses the money to buy the staff drinks. He places his wedding card on another guest’s gift, and blatantly stares at Pam’s chest when she wears a low-cut sweater.
There is also the famous boxer who gives our hero the boxing match chance of a lifetime. Armed with these elements, “Creed” then tweaks them, playing on our expectations before occasionally surprising us. It may be easy to predict where the film takes us, but that doesn’t reduce the power and enormity of the emotional responses it gets from the audience. This is a crowd-pleaser that takes its time building its character-driven universe. There are as many quietly effective moments as there are stand-up-and-cheer moments, and they’re all handled with skill and dexterity on both sides of the camera. Later, they set aside their differences and faced a common Soviet enemy as the series turned its attention to Cold War geopolitics. By then, Apollo was the sidekick and the sacrificial friend, an injustice that “Creed,” by its very title, seeks to redress. Coogler’s direction leaves little doubt that “Creed” is writing a love letter to “Rocky” lore while also establishing an original narrative about its own creation, Adonis Lancome makeup (Michael B. Jordan). Coogler perfectly captures his intentions in an early conversation between Rocky and Donnie .
This rejection is further emphasized as Donnie is beaten in a sparring match by light heavyweight division first contender Danny “The Stuntman” Wheeler after he publicly challenges the whole gym to prove himself by betting to give away his 1965 Ford Mustang. Mary Anne vehemently opposes his aspirations, remembering how her husband was killed in the ring by Ivan Drago thirty years ago. Undaunted, Donnie travels to Philadelphia in hopes of getting in touch with his father’s old friend and rival, former heavyweight champion, Rocky Balboa. Wanting “a real show at a club”, they managed to persuade the owner of a bar in Tallahassee to book them by claiming that they could guarantee an audience of 200 people. For their first recordings he matched the band up with John Kurzweg, a producer and friend of Hanson’s who he felt was an appropriate fit.
He travels to Philadelphia, where Rocky (Mr. Stallone, as if that needed saying) is running a restaurant and keeping a low profile. He’s all done with boxing, but Adonis persuades him to give it one more try. They start training, and before long a shot at the title materializes, a classic mismatch with a British brawler named Ricky Conlan . Like Rocky himself almost 40 years earlier, Adonis is a designated tomato can for a superior fighter. Mr. Jordan plays a talented light-heavyweight whose rapid ascent in the sport is fueled by an identity crisis. The love child of Apollo , Rocky’s erstwhile nemesis and eventual best friend, the young man is unsure whether to embrace or spurn the legacy of a father he never knew.
First, before entering the ring, Donnie receives a present from Mary Anne — new American flag trunks similar to the ones Apollo and later Rocky wore. Additionally, to the surprise of nearly everyone, Donnie gives Conlan all he can handle. Conlan knocks Donnie down, but Donnie recovers to knock Conlan down for the first time in his career. However, Donnie has won the respect of Conlan and the crowd; as Max Kellerman puts it while calling the fight for HBO, “Ricky Conlan won the fight, but Adonis Creed won the night.” Conlan tells Donnie that he is the future of the light heavyweight division.
Creed released two studio albums, My Own Prison in 1997 and Human Clay in 1999, before Marshall left the band in 2000. The band’s third album, Weathered, was released in 2001, with Tremonti on bass guitar. Creed disbanded in 2004; Stapp pursued a solo career while Tremonti, Marshall, and Phillips founded the band Alter Bridge with Myles Kennedy. This five-piece line-up lasted through 1994, and Brasher left the band in 1995. The four musicians had already written and collaborated on four of the songs that would go on to become tracks on Creed’s chart-topping debut album, My Own Prison. Principal photography began on January 19, 2015 on location at Goodison Park, with the first scene shot taking place during a Barclays Premier League football match between Everton and West Bromwich Albion. Goodison would later host both the climactic film fight between Donnie and Conlan and also Bellew’s real-life title fight against Ilunga Makabu in May 2016, which was the first outdoor boxing match in Liverpool since 1949. Donnie, fighting under his biological mother’s surname, Johnson, and the fight name “Hollywood”, defeats local fighter Leo “The Lion” Sporino, which upsets the opposing corner. This leads to the opposing side leaking the news that Donnie is Creed’s illegitimate son. Rocky receives a call from the handlers of world light heavyweight champion “Pretty” Ricky Conlan, who is being forced into retirement by an impending prison term.
