By 2004, the year of Estée’s death, the company had become a department-store giant. It had launched successful new cosmetic brands including Clinique, Prescriptives, Stila, M.A.C., and Aramis, and was the largest privately held cosmetics company in the world. Founded in 1946, the well-known cosmetics company boasts a wide portfolio of beauty products, including makeup, skincare and haircare items, and fragrances. Some of its popular brands include DKNY, Clinique, La Mer, and Michael Kors. After years of operating her cosmetics business, Lauder made it official in 1946 by forming the corporation that still bears her name today.

The ninth child of an immigrant household created a family cosmetics dynasty by giving her products away. In her later life, Lauder devoted much of her time to her philanthropic efforts. Her oldest son Leonard is the chairman emeritus of the Estée Lauder Companies; her younger son Ronald is the Lancome makeup chairman of Clinique Laboratories, LLC, and her grandson William Lauder is the executive chairman of the Estée Lauder Companies. In 1973, Lauder reduced her role in the company’s day-to-day operations. She resigned her post as president but stayed on as the company’s chairman of the board.

Makeup artists endorsed the company’s products through word of mouth, sharing the line with clients, photographers, and models, and M•A•C has become one of the most popular and well-known professional makeup brands available. The company’s products are now sold in more than 120 countries around the world. M•A•C added to Estee Lauder’s bottom line and has expanded the parent company’s social and consumer network. As far as shopping for beauty products goes, finding the right foundation has always been one of the more challenging tasks.
