Once you get the 4 bearings out, it’s really obvious which ones to replace. I’ve pried the seals off to rinse them out and press in more grease with some success. Shielded bearings are meant to keep chunks out and are the cheapest.

We sold 10 TrailMate trikes before we sold the one Schwinn Meridian 3 speed and it took 2 years to do it. The axle appears to be a solid unit that extends all the way across and through the hub of the left side wheel. Which would seem to indicate that this thing has six bearings in the rear — two in the hub of the left wheel, and two in each of the the axle tubes. The drive sprocket appears to be woodruff-keyed onto the axle, which has a slot machined into its mid-section to receive the key. The wheels are retained by a single outboard nylock nut.
