It’s super funny to see that you’ve got “16 hours and 35 minutes” left, and not just “16 hours”. You can check your activity log on the watch and also in the Casio Move app in more detail. I also found that by storing the watch face down, the screen turns off, saving even more battery juice. Since the Casio G-Shock GBD-H1000 doesn’t track sleep and, quite frankly, can’t be worn in bed, you can store it on your bedside table face overnight. The Casio G-Shock GBD-H1000 is also rather bulky which can not only be annoying for some runners but it can also affect the precision of heart rate readings.

On the plus side, it is rugged for sure and well-protected against the elements. The watch can withstand vibration and it is also watertight and rated to 200 metres so you can swim in it (it won’t record heart rate underwater though). The screen is bright and has a good contrast so it’s visible in broad daylight. Import data on your activity collected by apps from other companies and display it within the G-SHOCK MOVE app. You can also link your tracked measurements for display and use within apps provided by STRAVA, Google fit and Apple Health.

Increase motivation by managing measurement data and training history with the app, which automatically creates training plans tailored to set targets. Displays the current heart rate, as well as a heart rate zone that shows exercise intensity at five stages, and is useful for pace management during activities and endurance training. Vibrates simple alerts for time elapsed during training and heart rate zone, as well as smartphone email receipt and other notifications. EL panel illuminates main dial and thus ensures easier readability. The auto function provides automatic switching of illumination by leaning your hand to the face.

I’m certainly going to be keeping this watch on my wrist while being active for a long time to come. There is a lot you can do and view in the G-Shock Move app that isn’t really natively available on the watch, or is simply more convenient on the phone. I found, for example, that viewing the details of my workout wasn’t as simple on the watch screen itself as compared with the app. The app is also appreciably snappier than the G-Shock Move watch itself in certain regards. The timepiece’s operating system doesn’t normally lag, but it does take some time if it is updating something related to memory .

Vibration alerts can be used, but notifications are not displayed in training mode. As a GPS-based device trying to be lean on power consumption I found that the activity tracking of my hikes was pretty accurate. Casio seemed a bit off when it comes to heart-rate tracking, altitude, and calories burned.

Other than running, the watch is close in function to the early Fitbits, back when the wearable was a slightly fancy pedometer. The GBD-H1000 will track steps, estimate your calorie burn and show you your heart rate averages. Combine this with the fact that the manual has all kinds of hidden features for long presses, and you’ll understand why I think the interface could do with some work. A five-button baby g shock approach works fine for plenty of wearables with similar functionality – Garmin and Polar both have watches with this set-up. Casio should take a leaf out of those brands’ books and simplify. The GBD-H1000 is a big, unapologetically chunky watch that fully embraces Casio’s G-Shock heritage right down to the monochrome display and instantly recognisable beep when buttons are pressed.
