Schwinn made racing bikes but also pleasure cruisers, and even a tandem bike. The company began operations in a factory at the northwest corner of Peoria and Lake Streets in Chicago. With the collapse of the bicycle market around the turn of the century, the company purchased March-Davis, a competitor which was operating on what was then the city’s far west side, and moved operations there. As Schwinn declined, another U.S. manufacturer moved into the breach. Unlike nearly every schwinn bicycles other major bike company, the three-decade-old Trek Bicycle Corp. still makes a considerable share of its bikes in the United States — any bike that costs more than $800, about 30 percent of its production. At its Waterloo, Wis., headquarters, about half of its 785 employees work in manufacturing, and the plant is expanding. An additional 440 Trek employees work elsewhere in the United States.

The fillet-brazed CrMo frame construction of Schwinn’s second class of lightweight bicycles – the Superior, Sports Tourer and Super Sport – was unique. The production flow for these bicycles began with frame fabrication in the handbuild part of the Chicago Schwinn factory; a low-volume production area. Frame tubes were mitered in a jig by machine, and then the remaining fabrication work (brazing, filleting, braze-ons, and finishing) was done by hand. The seat and down tubes, as well as the top tube on the largest frame sizes, are slightly oversize at 29.5 mm in diameter. Ideas like balloon tires were introduced in 1933 and soon became the standard of the industry.

The series consists of two models—Coston CE and Coston DX—plus step-over and step-through versions of those bikes—four bicycles in total. It’s outfitted with a lightweight aluminum frame that’s available in black and white paint jobs. The frame also features an integrated rear rack, so you can carry panniers or attach a child seat and take your child along for the ride. The most premium build sports a lightweight carbon frame and fork with Shimano 105 components. There’s also an aluminum-framed version of this build with a full-carbon fork. Most models of Schwinn bikes have years of images and information via old catalogs, advertisements and Schwinn documentation.

Unlike its progenitors, the Klunker proved incapable of withstanding hard off-road use, and after an unsuccessful attempt to reintroduce the model as the Spitfire 5, it was dropped from production. With their aging product line, Schwinn failed to dominate the huge sport bike boom of 1971–1975, which saw millions of 10-speed bicycles sold to new cyclists. Schwinn did allow some dealers to sell imported road racing bikes, and by 1973 was using the Schwinn name on the Le Tour, a Japanese-made low-cost sport/touring 10-speed bicycle. Schwinn developed strong trading relationships with two Japanese bicycle manufacturers in particular, Bridgestone and National/Panasonic.
