As you can imagine, a robot that navigates by ‘looking’ upwards with a camera is going to struggle if it goes under a sofa. They all have drop sensors to prevent them falling down the stairs. Suction power is more than adequate for the task in hand plus you’ll get a very acceptable 120 minutes of operation on normal mode. The unit returns to its charging dock automatically if the battery goes below 20%. Despite being a few years old, the Roomba S9+ is still arguably the most advanced – and expensive – robot vac around at the moment, and a veritable stonker it is, too. Like the Roomba i3+, i7+ and new J7+, the flagship S9+ ships with an automatic bin-emptying function that is truly hands off.
You should have a regular schedule of things such as battery checks, clogs, emptying the dustbins, checking the extractors for tangles and general cleaning. Lifting dirt and debris into the vacuum chamber to be irobot vacuum cleaner collected by the bin is the one thing a vacuum has to do. It doesn’t matter how powerful the motor is or how large the collection bin is if you don’t have extractor bars the dirt will never leave the floor.
You can always tuck your bed skirt up until the cleaning is done, provided there is enough light to maneuver under your bed. The Roomba will go through most bed skirts and low hanging window dressings as they are not heavy enough to trip the touch sensors. In this instance, the Roomba 980 will reverse the bars and attempt to free itself. If successful it will go around the cord to prevent being tangled again.
This does mean that it tends not to get too close to the walls and corners of rooms, or furniture, so edge cleaning isn’t so good but that’s a pretty minor quibble given the decent asking price. Amazingly, this actually works, although setting it up does reveal some minor limitations of shark cordless the system. Aside from avoiding clutter, the J7+ also learns as it goes about its daily business by sending the user a number of images it has taken of any offending obstacles it’s come across while vacuuming. All you do is let it know whether the obstacles are permanent or temporary.
The robovac looks like it’ll be called the Dyson 360 Hyperdymium, which likely means it’ll be equipped with the brand’s strongest motor, the Hyperdymium — which you’ll find in the Dyson V11 to the Dyson V15 Detect. If you don’t want to run the vacuum manually, you can set a schedule for automatic cleaning, even setting the power mode you want the shark cordless robot vac to clean at per zone. The Roomba also has three-stage cleaning and carpet boost technology. However, that being said, it still underperforms what Roomba owners have become used too. It will clean well, and it doesn’t miss a lot, but compared to some of the earlier models with fewer features, it doesn’t do as good of a job as it should.
