With Dyson technology suction doesn’t die as the battery starts to drain. I think before exploring new areas of innovation in design, the quality of the original product should be further developed. Dyson is always great in terms of suction and air-technology, but it’s not quite there for robotics yet. But there are changes from previous models, the most obvious of which is the shape of the robot vacuum itself, which seems wider and shorter. It also has one flat side, so it has more in common with the Neato Botvac than previous Dyson vacs – superficially, at least. The most interesting change for this product, though, is the new shape.
Like some other Dyson products, the 360 Eye’s value is also questionable. Sure, I like 360 Eye’s app and the way it navigates around a room, but the Neato Botvac Connected has similar features, performs better in every category and costs $300 less. That doesn’t mean you won’t like Dyson’s Wi-Fi model, just be sure to weigh it against the competition before you buy. As we’ve mentioned, this isn’t Dyson’s first robot vacuum, but it could be the first for the US. The 360 Hyperdymium follows up the previous models, the 360 Eye and 360 Heurist, except it’s flatter and wider.
Robot vacuums are brilliant, but still have a knack for getting stuck, which is why the RX9.2’s laser and camera come in so handy. These stop it from bashing into obstacles as it’s cleaning, while mapping the room so it knows where it’s been. We found this was particularly useful with pet bowls, which other models often collided with. Another useful feature is its ‘trinity’ shape, meaning dyson robot vacuum it can reach corners and edges that its round counterparts may not. The brush bar on the Dyson 360 Eye vacuum cleaner extends to the full width of the machine, meaning that it doesn’t rely on side sweepers to reach the edges of the room. It uses patented carbon fiber brush bar technology to remove fine dust on hard floors, and stiff nylon bristles to agitate and clean carpets.
The brush bar sports two types of bristles for carpet and bare floors, and stretches the whole width of the machine. The dustbin is on the small side at 330ml and we did find it needed emptying after every complete clean (even when the house was reasonably dust-free to start with). However, we liked that the machine comes with a lightweight charging base, it can be folded up when not in use or easily tucked away in a corner. We put the device to the test by using it in a very busy household across three floors of the home.
For instance, the 360 Eye can weave in and out of table and chair legs better than competitors so you don’t have to stack chairs on top of tables on scheduled-clean mornings. However, it occasionally struggled with this, bumping into the docking station rather than parking itself.
The unit can use gyro, camera, radar, and laser guided systems to create a floor plan, which can be permanently stored for more efficiency, and updated with information on areas which have been cleaned. Thus, the cleaning efficiency is greatly improved and the repetition rate is reduced significantly. This futuristic-looking robot certainly catches the eye with its blue and silver design. Fast forward to present day and the product range now includes cordless, handheld and robot vacuums as well as hair care, air treatment and even lighting products. It boasts a reactive AI system that uses two cameras to detect objects in real time.
Many homeowners love the convenience of a robotic vacuum as they can simply set it to clean on a regular schedule. It’s a great supplement to the weekly full house cleaning that a large upright or canister cleaner is built for. The Dyson Eye 360 performs surprisingly well for a small machine as it has a lot of suction and advanced filtration for removing virtually all allergens that it encounters. For a lot of homes it is all that is needed to keep the floors clean, eliminating the need to spend time at night or on weekends running a larger vacuum.
But when I pressed the trigger to activate the vacuum, my mouth gaped open and I began spewing profanities. To my horror, the laser showed that every inch of the floor in every room of the house was blanketed in a light layer of dog fur.
Surfaces included wooden, carpeted and tiled floors, all with plenty of obstacles so that we could closely observe how the robot navigated through rooms and see what it did and didn’t clean up. This allowed us to understand the pros and cons of the machine and judge whether its advanced technology is really worth the hefty price tag.
