Maier is a bike industry veteran who has worked for Pacific, Cannondale, PeopleForBikes and RockyMounts.He left RockyMounts last year to take a position with United Wheels in Ohio. Niner co-founder Chris Sugai will continue to lead the company, which will remain headquartered in Fort Collins, Colorado. He said the reborn Niner is already looking to hire several positions in engineering and marketing. Huffy Corp. also makes lawn equipment and basketball backboards.
Huffy said the restructuring reflected some very basic changes in U.S. consumers’ buying patterns. It pointed out that in 1997 nearly 60 percent of the bikes sold in the United States were produced by foreign manufacturers. The company said bicycles produced in Asia typically cost 10 to 20 percent less than comparable U.S.-produced models. This leaves companies like Huffy with no alternative but to adopt a competitive mix of domestic and non-domestic products. Huffy said it also planned to develop Mexican sources as alternatives for opening price point bikes currently imported from Asia.

In addition, Huffy also snapped up a bankrupt manufacturer and distributor of basketball goods calledSure Shot International, for$1.5 million. Sure Shot International was then absorbed into Huffy’s Sports Co. subsidiary.
The former Huffy U.S. bicycle factory in Celina, Ohio, is today used by Crown Equipment Corporation to produce forklifts. This will make the bike less comfortable to ride in these situations, and will cause more strain on your body, as well as more wear and tear to the bike. As the management of the company changed, their production line shifted to China and that is when the quality of the products started degrading. From the rear wheel to the front construction of the bike, Huffy started using cheap materials and that did not go well. These bikes are great for smooth riding and will provide you with a nice experience on the road.
Originally they could be found under the brand name “Dayton” or “Firestone” back in the 1930s, along with the actual Huffman name. In reality, their bicycles weren’t that different from Schwinn or a lot of the other middle-market bicycles. I have worked on a lot of Huffys huffy mountain bike and ridden many of them too.
