Apart from charging the battery, the dock offers a place to clean the device as well as storage. It comes with a tray to hold water when shark cordless rinsing out the machine after a cleaning task. Afterward, the docking station holds the device until you need it for another task.
The battery is a lithium-ion, which means better performance and longer life. As the vacuum picks up hair and dirt, some of this debris can get stuck in the base and along the brush roll. However the battery life keeps me from cleaning more than a room at a time. Also, I think it’s a little less powerful than the corded version but that was not a surprise. You can only do one wet and irobot vacuum cleaner dry pass and with a little less power than the corded it really makes it harder to achieve efficient cleaning.
