Once the trigger is let go, the motor stops—so the battery is only in use while the trimmer is spinning. With gas trimmers, the engine runs constantly whether the trimmer is trimming or not. I’m still using it—in fact, I got rid of my corded blower and haven’t missed it at all. I’m now reviewing the new EGO Power+ 15” POWERLOAD String Trimmer and let’s just cut to the chase. In fact, it’s better than my trusted Stihl gas trimmer in every way—except for usage time. The Powerload and carbon fiber shaft features are really nice. However, it’s also the performance of this string trimmer that has consistently kept it on top of our ratings since its launch. EGO made a couple of major leaps forward in string trimmer technology with their ST1520 model.
The power is beyond impressive, and the Power Load feature is worth the additional investment. I have the two 5.0Ah batteries that came with my blower and mower, a 2.5Ah that came with the trimmer, a 2.0 that came with the hedge trimmer, and two additional 2.0Ah batteries I found on clearance. Needless to say, I can maintain my entire yard (well, front or back, can’t do both without recharging) with ease. I’ve been a fan of EGO cordless power tools, and this one is no different. I might have opted for the straight shaft version if I were purchasing the tool, but the split shaft version is less expensive and could potentially be folded back up for seasonal storage.
Its telescoping shaft and handle are easy to adjust and make the tool very comfortable to use, even for extended trimming sessions. I guess I have been fortunate in my EGO experiences. I have both the blower and hedge clippers and they have been great. I always have one battery sitting on the charger and I am using the other. This trimmer looks great and ‘almost’ makes me want to start mowing and trimming my yard again. A couple of years ago I finally gave up the fight and started having someone mow and edge every other week and I just mowed in between because I hated edging so much.
So far, EGO has already proven itself over and over again in terms of both power and runtime. Turning their sights on ergonomics just makes good sense. We’ve already been impressed with what we’ve experienced first-hand with this tool.
