Are Schwinn Bikes Good? What You Need To Know Before Buying!

There is a thriving market out there for vintage Schwinn bikes, which is part of the reason a shop like Barnard’s (est. 1911) can still be in business today. Some buyers just like the look and feel of the old classics, while others are trying to tap into something more personal and sentimental. Schwinns occupy plenty of pages in the flip-book of Baby Boomer nostalgia, after all, coasting through idyllic suburban summer days with the sound of baseball cards buzzing between the spokes. Most models of Schwinn bikes have years of images and information via old catalogs, advertisements and Schwinn documentation.

Don’t expect them to last for 10 years or have that old feeling of joy for its great performance. Today they have a reputation as being the few bike brands that still maintain their quality standards. Although they too import large chunk ( above 85% ) of bicycles from china; at least they are of high quality. Over the years, Schwinn’s brand has started to align itself more with affordability than with performance. Although the company’s early bikes were fairly popular among big name cyclists, you won’t find any Schwinn bikes on the Tour de France circuit.

I grew up with schwinn bikes I had a Varsity friends of mine had a Lemon Peeler Krate, a Ram Horn and another Varsity were talking late 60’s – early 70’s. I liked the way before you bought one they sized you up then allow you to ride it in there lot great momories. If your child is more comfortable, then they will want to ride, and learning will be less frustrating for everyone involved. Plus, you can’t loose with the Schwinn name, since it is backed with a limited lifetime warranty for as long as you own the bike, and has been building great kids bikes since 1895. The Schwinn brand has remained popular with consumers due to nostalgia and the retro styling of their models, however, the quality of their bikes has diminished from the ones that were produced before the dawn of the 21st century.

Schwinn bought out Arnold’s share of the company, installing himself as the sole master and commander of the business (although he did keep the Arnold, Schwinn & Co. name in use for decades afterward). I can’t speak to Schwinn’s reputation across the Seven Seas, but the business was certainly making dough on its home continent. Even when you want to go for the trails, mountain hills, or long biking trips; these new mid-range Schwinn bikes gonna do great for average riders. But that does not mean the bike is as good as they use to be back in the 20th century. They are no longer the bike manufacturer that produce both entry-level bikes and top of the line bikes of great quality. Today their brand is synonymous with cheap entry-level bikes of decent quality. Today if you ask anyone about their Bikes they will first off mention. They no longer connect the business with sporting achievement and game-changing technology.

Seeking to increase its brand recognition, Schwinn established additional company-operated shops, a move that alienated existing independent bike retailers in cities where the company stores had opened. This in turn led to further inroads by domestic and foreign competitors. Faced with a downward sales spiral, Schwinn went into bankruptcy in 1992.

The brand was deeply embedded into the culture from the dawning of the 20th century onward. While the Hollywood bike was ostensibly a budget-priced kid’s option, it was still built to be a workhorse—as was the Chicago way. Our museum artifact stayed on the road for a solid 50 years, in fact, serving most recently as the trusty steed of a young Japanese immigrant in the 2010s. She zig-zagged the streets of her new Chicago neighborhood each day, learning the lay of the land on a bike that some of her neighbors might have once had a hand in building.

While I’m no longer growing (at least not up…out is a different story!), I wasn’t sure exactly how/where I’d be riding the most. It’s a great general-purpose bike that can handle multiple terrains and riding conditions. While I’ve known how to ride a bike forever, I still consider myself a beginner, so this bike is a good one to start with.
