EGO PowerLoad Multi-Head String Trimmer

Did a lot of research before buying into their system because I have some Dewalt 20V stuff but I’m not a fan of their OPE. Makita would have been my second choice for home use. This tear down review of the Ego blower highlights the option . The long service time is a well-known issue within the community.

One other big change EGO is making is that both the powerhead and string trimmer attachment with a carbon fiber shaft. This is the first time EGO has paired PowerLoad technology with its 56V battery-powered multi-head system. If you’re new to the feature, PowerLoad automatically winds up your trimmer line, saving you the irritation of doing it manually.

The sturdy build quality, indestructible shaft and quiet brushless motor make this trimmer—dare I say it—fun to use. I know my wife is intimidated by gas powered equipment, and I imagine it’s easier to get kids involved with electric stuff as well. With proper care/maintenance I expect 10 years out of a trimmer. I don’t expect the current iterations of battery operated tools will last 10 years, without factoring for the batteries which probably won’t make it that long either. I’d prefer to have the attachment system and a split boom. The shaft for the end part comes out of a coupler.

This model features a carbon fiber shaft, making it very strong, though the whole unit isn’t particularly light. I have a decent sized yard and can trim and edge twice on one charge with juice left over. The auto feed system works incredibly well. (But it’s doing its job. The cord length is always perfect) I’m 6′ and don’t have to hunch over which really saves my back. I attached a shoulder strap to the mount that came with it and it balances so well that I barely have to touch the trimmer outside of pulling the trigger. I tried the 2nd speed setting once but didn’t need it.

The other really notable feature of the new EGO Carbon Fiber String Trimmer is the Powerload auto-feeding head. Anyone who has wrestled with loading fresh line into a string trimmer head understands this. Some systems work better than others—but none work as easily as the Powerload system. However, weight distribution plays a big part in how comfortable the string trimmer actually feels. The feather-light shaft doesn’t mean a whole lot if the trimmer is unbalanced. You wind up having to physically overcompensate by keeping the heavy side lifted up.

After some time I started trimming the taller weeds and grass from the top down, and then clearing them out from the side. I had a little trouble until I flexed the joint against a workbench and the holes lined up perfectly. The trimmer arrives folded up in a half-height box. To set it up, you close the hinged joint and fasten the two ends of the shaft together with a single screw. Then, it’s quick to attach the guard and front handle. We measured 87 decibels when holding it at arm’s length, and when spinning, this string trimmer produces a pleasant, even sounding hum. This string trimmer is most in its element when tackling thick weeds and grasses. It’s one of the most powerful battery-powered trimmers in our tests and rips through the neglected, brushy corners of the yard. If the brush is thick enough that the trimmer doesn’t blow it flat, the Ego Power+ is wonderfully effective .
