Just like the 694, the 692 is a great basic robot vacuum for daily cleanings to suck up dirt, pet hair, or dust. You’ll need to empty this vacuum yourself, and you won’t be able to program it to avoid obstacles or spot-clean. But it may be worth sacrificing some convenience if you’re on a budget—and using the Roomba will still be easier than maneuvering your vacuum around the house.

The best robot vacuums have a lot of sophisticated technology and special features, which aren’t necessary for everyone.
At the end of each job, the robo-vac automatically empties its small dustbin into the large clean base – that means you won’t have to empty the dustbin yourself and you’ll only have to tend to the base once every few weeks. Just keep in mind that most dyson robot vacuum self-cleaning bases require proprietary garbage bags – another long-term expense you’ll have to factor in. Also, any vac-and-mop robot with a water tank will not dump its dirty water into the clean base, so you’ll still have to clean that yourself.

One option is to consider a more affordable Roomba alternative; another is to wait until iRobot discounts some of its Roomba models, like it’s doing right now.
We’ve concluded that the Roborock Q5’s smart mapping works better, but this new addition to the i3 EVO makes it slightly smarter than it was previously. For every robot vacuum, we run at least two regular cleaning cycles across about 1,000 square bissell crosswave cordless feet, with lots of obstacles and thresholds. None of the rooms have any wall-to-wall carpet, but the space does have several area rugs, with styles ranging from lightweight doormats to rubber-backed, medium-pile rugs that take up half a room.

Manual controls are also available, which isn’t something you see on a ton of robo-vacs. This option lets you control the machine almost like a slow and slightly clumsy RC car, giving you more control over where it cleans. The biggest selling point of the Roomba j7 series is its upgraded AI-driven computer vision which helps it detect and move around objects. This includes pet poop – a robot vacuum’s arch nemesis – and iRobot even promises that it will replace your j7 machine if it runs into pet poop within the first year of ownership.
Apart from that, there’s not much that you’re missing here, making this an excellent midrange pick, especially for homes with an abundance of area rugs and other low-pile carpets. No other cleaner we’ve tested cleans carpets like those better than the S7. Roomba budget models (Dirt Dog and Model 401) used a simplified interface (a single “Clean” button) and lacked some of the software-controlled flexibility of other versions. The Roomba Dirt Dog contained sweeping brushes and a larger dust bin, but lacked the vacuum motor, using the space that would be required for the vacuum for additional dust bin volume. It was designed for a home shop or garage environment.[5] The Roomba Model 401 was similar but had a standard-size dust bin and vacuum system.
However, a lot of the residue remained on the mop head after cleaning, so we’d recommend removing and washing it after every mopping session. This vacuum starts its first job by cleaning around the perimeter of the room, memorizing and storing information about the layout of your home for future tasks. Once it’s made a complete map, it’ll start methodically working its way through the room, seamlessly avoiding furniture and picking up debris in its path.
