The Nexgrill was fairly average in terms of its performance — it didn’t get quite as hot as some of the more expensive grills and had a few hot spots, but it still got the job done. It performs best on basics like hamburgers and hot dogs, and the grill responded quickly to any temperature changes during testing, making it easy to control. However, if you do opt for this budget-friendly grill, be warned that assembly is time-consuming and a bit complicated — of all the grills we tested, it took us the longest to put together due to its unclear instructions.

The grill has three burners, as well as a special high-heat searing zone, and its primary cooking grate is 513 square inches, providing plenty of space for your food. This weber gas grill led us to surmise that the smaller Spirit model concentrates the burners’ heat better. We had no issues with the meat sticking to the flat, porcelain-coated iron grates.

This grill boasts 672 square inches of grilling space across two levels of grates, and it offers an impressive temperature range of 200 to 600 degrees Fahrenheit, allowing it to be used for both grilling and smoking. The aim of this test is to assess how the grill handles thicker cuts of meat and slower, more subtle cooking. We used a spatchcock chicken slathered in BBQ sauce, another test of whether food sticks to the grill. We cooked it for 40 minutes, using the two side burners weber charcoal grill on a low heat, with the middle burner off to create indirect heat. There are plenty of basic gas grills with minimal features, such as the Char-Broil Signature Series Amplifire 2-Burner Gas Grill, but you can also find grills with specialty features, if you’re so inclined. Some popular options include a side burner, which can be used to boil a pot of water to cook vegetables while you grill, or a sear station, which delivers extra-high heat to put a beautiful char on meat.

This model’s core design components—firebox, burners, control panel—are all the same as those of the Genesis II E-310, which we tested in 2017 and 2018. Knowing this, we’re confident that the new Genesis will perform at least as well as its predecessors. “I emailed the photos on Thursday, and on Saturday an incident rep called me. I got a gentle lecture on cleaning and safety, but then he said they’d be sending me a whole-new cookbox (the main bottom half of the grill)—no charge, no shipping fees.
