In reality, mass-market French manufacturers such as Peugeot were not infrequently criticized for material and assembly quality — as well as stagnant technology — in their low- and mid-level product lines.
Schwinn also faced increasing competition from other high-quality US-based brands such as Specialized, Trek, and Cannondale. In 1980, 1400 factory workers went on strike for thirteen weeks to demand higher pay. This, combined with the import-dominated market and outdated factory, meant that the company management shifted the majority of production to Japan. Crucially, Schwinn also failed to successfully break into the newly emerging markets of BMX and mountain biking in the mid/late 1970s. In both cases, Schwinn was initially dismissive of the new disciplines, before abruptly U-turning when they realized how popular they were – by which time it was already too late.
A few participants began designing and building small numbers of mountain bikes with frames made out of modern butted chrome-molybdenum alloy steel. Using the standard electro-forged cantilever frame, and fitted with five-speed derailleur gears and knobby tires, the Klunker 5 was never heavily marketed, and was not even listed in the Schwinn product catalog. Unlike its progenitors, the Klunker proved incapable of withstanding hard off-road use, and after an unsuccessful attempt to reintroduce the model as the Spitfire 5, it was dropped from production.
Nevertheless, Peugeot proudly advertised its victorious racing heritage at every opportunity. By 1979, even the Paramount had been passed, technologically speaking, by a new generation of American as well as foreign custom bicycle manufacturers. The IC3 is somewhat bare-bones compared to the IC4, but for us, the extra features were not worth the extra $300. Like the IC4, the IC3 has double-sided pedals so you can use sneakers or clips, and it’s fully adjustable. One big difference between the two is that, instead of magnetic resistance, the IC3 uses flywheel resistance. It’s louder, but not so loud that it’s a distraction, and I actually kind of like the feedback of the slight whirring sound it makes when you really push yourself.
