Ignaz Schwinn was born in Hardheim, Baden, Germany, in 1860 and worked on two-wheeled ancestors of the modern bicycle that appeared in 19th century Europe. In 1895, with the financial backing of fellow German American Adolph Frederick William Arnold (a meat packer), he founded Arnold, Schwinn & Company. Schwinn’s new company coincided with a sudden bicycle craze in America.
With these models Schwinn achieved a nice balance of frame rigidity and smooth handling. Over the years, Schwinn has empowered millions of people, earning a special place in the hearts and minds of generations of riders. We have spent over a century building the bicycle industry into what it is today, and we’re not done yet. Schwinn themselves began increasingly importing bikes from the Japanese producers Bridgestone and Panasonic, which were able to rival prestigious models such as the Schwinn Paramount, yet could be sold at half the price. Despite this, Schwinn still sold a huge number of bicycles in the early 1970s -but overall consumer preference had gravitated towards European and Japanese imported bikes. Throughout the decade, the company further expanded its range of 10-speed racing bikes with the launch of the Varsity, Continental, and LeTour models, in order to rival European heavyweights such as Peugeot and Gitane.
A growing number of US teens and young adults were purchasing imported European sport racing or sport touring bicycles, many fitted with multiple derailleur-shifted gears. Schwinn decided to meet the challenge by developing two lines of sport or road ‘racer’ bicycles. One was already in the catalog — the limited production Paramount series. As always, the Paramount spared no expense; the bicycles were given high-quality lightweight lugged steel frames using double-butted tubes of Reynolds 531 and fitted with quality European components including Campagnolo derailleurs, hubs, and gears. The Paramount series had limited production numbers, making vintage examples quite rare today.

For now, I go by feel and try to match my effort level to the instructor’s. However, after failing to purchase shares in Giant, Schwinn ditched their arrangement and moved manufacturing to China. Meanwhile, Giant was able to retain all of the manufacturing expertise learned through Schwinn, kickstarting its rapid ascent to become the world’s biggest bicycle company in the 21st century. In conjunction with this, Schwinn, along with other USA-based bike manufacturers, successfully campaigned in 1955 to raise import taxes on foreign bikes. In 1938, the first bike in the Paramount series was issued, a high-end racing bike made of a strong Chromoly frame. During this period, Schwinn briefly had a successful motorcycle production division.
His design for the classic Sting-Ray Krate bike boldly features hand painted botanicals and “Trans Is Beautiful” messaging to remind others to not only love themselves, but to celebrate and lift up all people in their communities. Senarighi’s work has been featured internationally and he has worked with brands including Netflix, Glaad, and Nike. His You Are Loved billboards are continuing to spread throughout the nation through grassroots efforts and can be seen in over 200 locations across the United States. Until the recent rise of quality TIG-welded and composite bicycle frames, most high quality lightweight bicycles used lugs (external metal sleeve fittings) to join their frame tubing.
