Cuisinart Blend and Cook Soup Maker SBC-1000 Review

When Cuisinart offered me one to review, I asked my mum, Mamta, to put it through its paces, as she regularly makes soups at home. This burly blender is a pain to clean, as its blades aren’t removable. Navigating my fingers around the sharp metal to pick out pieces of lentil was a challenge. If you make a lot of soup, investing in a good soup machine will save you time and effort. Read our review of this Cuisinart model to see how it performed in our tests.

First a curry paste, with the machine having no trouble grinding up ingredients for a smooth result using ‘level 3 blend’ (there are 1–4 speeds available). Soups take minutes, whether you’re going for chunky or smooth, and you can blend smoothies too. Will I be giving up my traditional method of cooking soups? I still enjoy a good pot of bubbling soup simmering on the stove. However, I will use this Blend and Cook Soupmaker for quick soups and lunches and recipes that require a really nice pureed texture. From broths to bouillon, this is soup making simplified.

Four blending speeds and a pulse function are available to allow you to achieve the desired consistency. All the while, an integrated heater lets you choose from a high, medium, or low cuisinart pots and pans set settings, cooking the soup directly in the blender. A timer function keeps track of cooking time for you, truly making this all-in-one device a convenient option for soup aficionados.

Yet it’s bigger than many at 1.6 litres, making it a good, cheap option for a family of four. It’s also light, quiet, and comes with a brush and scouring pad for scrubbing off those tenacious soup residues. Overall, a strong soup maker which allows for more customisation, but let down by being large and weighty.

Or alternatively you have the SoyaJoy kitchen gadget that makes soup, soy milk and a few other things and is more in the style of a soup maker. But if you are outside of the UK, then you won’t find the same choice in soup makers. You get what you pay for, the Morphy Richards Soup Maker is really cheap compared to the cuisinart griddler elite. The Cuisinart Soup Maker had a much better blender and a capacity to bulk cook soup. Its easy to clean and we love also using it for if we just want a quick batch of soup to go with dinner.

Whenever the functionality changes, for example from cook to blend, you’ll hear a bleep. However, the lid had a hole to add ingredients, which is good, and it wasn’t very loud at all. Helpfully, the lid also has an in-built memory cuisinart pots and pans set function, useful if, say, you’ve forgotten an ingredient, or want to add something halfway through the cook. I’d suggest waiting a couple of minutes after you’ve finished before removing the lid, as it gets quite hot.

I have used my soup maker for making homemade sauces, hummus, pie filling and an endless supply of baby food. The idea behind the Cuisinart Soup Maker is an all-in-one cooking and blending machine for making soups and sauces. The blender worked well with creamy soups, too. With many other devices, you choose your function and it cooks and blends within a certain time frame.

We started by sautéing onions on low for a Scotch broth, with the heating plate helping to release the aroma and taste of the onions. The best thing about soup makers is how hands-free soup making can become. Instead of having to boil vegetables in a pan, then get out the blender or the food processor, it can all be done at once in one small sized kitchen gadget. But the reason it came up trumps is not aesthetic.

Whether you are making chunky or smooth soups, jams, sauces for pasta, curries or tasty risottos you can complete every stage of your recipe in the Cuisinart Soup Maker. Watch your ingredients as they cook inside the robust glass jar, adjust the heat settings, add ingredients and stir as required to achieve perfect results. While its basic design has evolved from that of a standard blender, the Cuisinart SSB1U Soup Maker promises to tackle much more than just blitzing food and ice. A booklet of recipes is also included for inspiration. Cuisinart’s automatic soup makers take the hard work out of creating healthy homemade soups from scratch. These ingenious kitchen companions sauté, cook, simmer and blend your favorite soup ingredients into tempting hot soups in a matter of minutes.

Choose from the different blending options – from them slow stir function to gently mix ingredients to retain a chunky texture, or blend at the end of the cooking cycle for smoother results. You can peel the vegetables (or use ready peeled if you have them), throw them into the soup maker, add a bit of stock and then let the soup maker do the work. Your setting that you choose on the soup maker will then give you either chunky or smooth soup. It was used for everything from making soups, homemade baby food, my homemade tomato sauce or just when we needed something quickly blending.
