It has everything you need to enjoy the outdoors, be it an extended camping trip in the mountains with family or a solo day trip to a hiking trail. The last day of any backpacking trip is bittersweet. But we also wondered if we would ever be able to backpack this beautiful stretch of the Oregon Coast Trail again.
Our second day of hiking took us to Highway 101 at the Thomas Creek Bridge. This is the only place our section of the trail followed the highway, in order to cross the tallest bridge in Oregon. The hardest part of beach camping is keeping sand out of your food, tent and everything else.
Mostly because there were dunes and the path was a beach walk… I’ll tell you though, walking in soft sand will give your legs a workout. While Secret Beach may not be a secret anymore, it doesn’t make it not worth visiting! You’ll want to park at the Thunder Cove Beach parking area. There are three “branches” off the main trail; I suggest walking to the last one. Not just a view of the beach, the actual beach. The trail is downhill toward the Natural bridges, and if you don’t have a sound footing while coming down, there IS a chance of continuing off the cliff.
Those 6 days in remote backcountry absolutely blew me away. When I got there, I opened up my handy dandy offline maps, Maps.Me, and was SHOCKED to see not one of the trails in Samuel H. Boardman was mapped out on it. This app has the most obscure trails on it, I’ve never come across a hike that wasn’t Ozark Trail Canopies on this app after using it for years. OK, we admit, we can probably say that about a lot of places along Oregon’s coast but hey, Samuel H. Boardman really is beautiful. In the middle of the night I looked outside and saw the Milky Way rising out of the dark Pacific as if the ocean were boiling.
But that answer doesn’t make much sense if you are backpacking the Oregon Coast Trail. Now I also need to tell you that today I don’t know if it’s legal to fly drones here. When I was there, it was many years ago and I called up a ranger station in the area first to see if it was possible. I am mentioning this because drone laws do change/update and you may want to check on a post I created talking about where can I fly my drone that clarifies a lot of this. Indian Creek Camp – We wanted to stay at Harris but it was booked out so we decided on Indian Creek Camp located in Gold Beach and we really liked the campsite. The staff was SUPER friendly and the amenities were perfect. They had toilets, showers, and the camping slots all had personal firepits.
If you want to get further into Natural Bridges (aka the spot), you’ll have to turn right, go back to the parking lot and start on the Thunderbird Cove trail. When you literally get 25 feet into it, there will be a hill to your left that leads to Natural Bridges, meaning you will have to go off the trail to Thunderbird Cove.
