It is a bit more expensive baby g shock than the aforementioned Baby G model due to its elegant design paired with G-Shock’s signature sturdiness. This is the best model to get if you are looking for a much simpler design that is closer to its predecessors. The G-Shock GST-B100BNR-1AJR is currently priced at $699 USD and above.
This watch marks the first time the G-STEEL connected series came out with a model that has a carbon bezel. The ultralight carbon bezel is fashion-forward and rugged, complementing the functionality of the watch. This 200-meter water-resistant G-SHOCK is solar-powered and has a mobile link function via Bluetooth.
It’s why I abandoned quartz watches in the very early 1980’s during my military career, using Hamilton MIL-W-46374B and GG-W-113 watches, alternating periodically between them. I could always sync to a WWV HF signal or a comm center chronometer every few days. When you’re out in some Godforsaken wilderness, desert wasteland or jungle, watch battery replacement isn’t feasible. If outside a region covered by one of the LF time signals (e.g. WWVB), it will continue working just fine, with the ability to set the time manually as needed, which shouldn’t be very often. The moderate size makes it much easier to keep under a sleeve when necessary and much less likely to get snagged and caught on equipment, the consequences of which could be injurious. From Casio’s point of view, it might not be a necessary upgrade. Even battery life concerns are mitigated somewhat because of the dual-layer screen — I got a couple of days’ use out of this watch easily in dual-layer mode. Underneath that monochrome display is a fully circular 1.2-inch 360 x 360 LCD screen. It feels quite small relative to the rest of the watch, but it isn’t difficult to use, and I like that it doesn’t dominate the watch’s design. The bigger problem is that it just doesn’t look great compared to the OLED panels used in most smartwatches — it’s quite low in contrast and isn’t easily visible in bright sunlight.
