And as much as I praised the improvements here, you still have to be aware of the limitations of smaller sensors when it comes to noise-to-pixel density ratio, low light performance, and dynamic range. It proved to me how many flagship drone features I actually don’t miss when they’re gone. This drone strikes a near perfect balance between price, dji drones mobility, and image quality. Usually when I bring my Mavic 2 Pro hiking or traveling, I rely on about three batteries per day of filming. The Mini 2 can transmit very clear video from up to around 6 miles, according to DJI. Suffice to say you can fly the Mini 2 well beyond visual range—which, friendly reminder, you should never do—and still get a video feed. Still, if you’re only in it for the aerial camera, there’s plenty to love. All the automated shot modes of the previous model—Dronie, Circle, Helix, and Rocket—are still there, along with a new one called Boomerang.
Thanks to the DJI Fly app and intelligent recording options, such as pre-programmed QuickShot flight paths and multiple panorama options, the Mini 2 can deliver creative pro-quality shots with a tap. The DJI Mini 2 is an impressive little drone that adds better image quality in a lightweight body. It’s fun and easy to fly with improved video quality that now at 100Mbps. I like the larger controller, and the added Cinema mode makes capturing smoother video better. It’s not designed for professional use; however, I can see it being used for a few broll shots in a promo or commercial. If it’s a compelling shot, nobody will care it what it was shot on.
As expected, the camera has difficulties with highlight in bright sunlight, so take the exposures as raw files, and adjust them in the finishing. Such small image chips suffer from image noise in low light. This is fact of life, but you only notice this in pictures taken in very low light. The advice is again to choose raw files, which gives much better control of image noise in the post-processing of the images, than whether the camera should choose noise reduction even on jpeg images. The upgraded Mini 2 can fly farther and withstand more wind than the previous version, and it can be purchased in two versions.
