It’s not quite as good as Micro Four Thirds, another format used by drones like the huge Yuneec H920 ($1,799.00 at DJI) and the DJI Inspire 2 ($1,799.00 at DJI) , but it’s also quite compact. First, you get tried-and-true options, including Point of Interest, Waypoint, Follow, Course Lock, and Home Lock. Point of Interest flies perfectly circular orbits about a point in space, keeping the camera honed at the center the entire time.

You can do all of those things with the Phantom 3 models, but new for the Phantom 4 is ActiveTrack, which uses the OSS to follow a subject. You just draw a box on screen around what you want to track, tap the Go button that appears and the drone starts following, keeping the camera centered on whoever or whatever you selected. There are two Draw modes that can be used in different scenarios. The Phantom 4 Pro is an excellent quadcopter for professional site surveying, 3D imaging of terrain and photogrammetry of structures. As for commercial use, the quality of the still image isn’t quite there yet in my opinion. The inclusion of RAW format for a sensor of this size and quality doesn’t appear to mean much with the Phantom 4.
In Tripod Mode, the maximum flight speed is limited to 5.6 miles per hour and the braking distance is reduced to 6.6 feet. There was no problem generating the whole spectrum of outputs from any of the three point clouds. The accuracy and quality depended on the source data, meaning we got the highest-resolution orthophotos from the flight performed 40m above ground. No surprise there but the point of our test was to see how accurate and of what quality the results would be at different heights. How high one decides to fly should always depend on the specific needs of one’s project, expected accuracy and required level of details. When used on the DJI Phantom 4 the Survey3 camera captures photos using its default interval timer.
