You can operate the mower just fine without the app, but for the complete experience, there are some added features. Start by scanning the QR code on your quick start guide, download the app, create an account if you don’t already have one, and pair the mower using the serial number and pairing code. It sounds more complicated than it is and takes less than 10 minutes to get started. There’s a step-by-step guide in the manual if you need more details.
Yet the full-on hare setting was too fast resulting in a small selection range between too slow and too fast. Keep in mind that mowing speed is a personal thing, so YMMV. The one thing that bugs me about battery-powered tools, is that there are no generic one-design-fits-all sun joe lawn mower batteries. Each company has its own proprietary battery designs, so once you buy that first tool, you are locked into that brand if you wish to swap batteries. The mower comes with a single battery and a charger. The battery takes about 45 min. – one hour to fully charge.
Greenworks also includes a high-lift set of blades in the kit which produces better results when bagging at the expense of some runtime. Greenworks designed these blades to rotate in opposite directions. They did this so that both blades direct grass straight back into the bag.
The Greenworks Pro 80V ran for a commendable 27 minutes. Realistically it will run for a solid couple of hours of making cuts. Although this isn’t the longest-lasting battery we’ve tested, we’d still recommend this model for professional and heavy-duty use.
A missing or damaged discharge cover can cause blade contact or injuries from thrown objects. Before and while moving backward with the mower, look behind and down for small children and other people. Step back from the mower in order to fully extend your arms. Having twin blades with twice the number of cutting edges seemed to help this mower cut the grass into even finer pieces than we’ve seen with many competing battery-powered lawn mowers. When you have larger blades nearly 24-inches across, you need a solid brushless motor to make it all work.
There’s no side discharge option, just mulching and bagging. Here in Texas I almost exclusively mulch or bag, and run into very few people who side discharge. In my opinion, the missing side discharge isn’t a deal breaker.
