Future Dyson robot vacuums could finally climb and clean your stairs

“The computer vision community has made crazy progress using deep learning for this stuff,” says Maggie Wigness, a computer scientist at ARL. This limited understanding is where the ARL robots begin to differ from other robots that rely on deep learning, says Ethan Stump, chief scientist of the AI for Maneuver and Mobility program at ARL. Most deep-learning systems function reliably only within the domains and environments in which they’ve been trained. Even if the domain is something like “every drivable road in San Francisco,” the robot will do fine, because that’s a data set that has already been collected.

As per the reports by The Verge, the unannounced vacuum cleaner may be called the Dyson 360 Hyperdymium. Reports also suggest that the Dyson vacuum cleaner will be equipped with the brand’s strongest motor, the Hyperdymium , which is supposed to be more reliable and quieter than a brushed motor. “So the requirements of a deep network are to a large extent misaligned with the requirements of an Army mission, and that’s a problem.”

Edge cleaning is a bit of a question mark as it won’t hug baseboards tightly as a Roomba would, often times only going within a centimeter or so according to TrustedReviews. Another feature that differentiates this from other robots is the thing that moves this around, instead of using the standard rubber wheels the 360 Eye uses tank tracks for several reasons. It almost doubles the height of any current Roomba or Neato vacuum which hurts its ability to clean under furniture. Espite recognizing the robot over Wi-Fi, it wouldn’t fully pair in the app itself.

In structured environments like factories, this works well enough. But in chaotic, unfamiliar, or poorly defined settings, reliance on rules makes robots notoriously bad at dealing with anything that could not be precisely predicted and planned for in advance. Algebra, probability theory, geometry and trigonometry combine to create the Dyson 360 Eye robot’s vision of the world. It took over 100,000 hours from a team of 31 robotic software engineers to create the navigation system. At the Institute we have often been impressed by the power of Dyson vacuums.

Dyson Canada will not be held liable for shipping delays in those cases. To process orders within this timeframe, we may need to contact you to validate your credentials. Delivery is Monday to Friday 9am – 6pm local time, not including statutory holidays. If a delivery cannot be completed (for example, if you’re not home), the carrier will leave a notification at your door indicating where you can pick up your order. Orders will be shipped within 2-7 business days via Canada Post.

This model is a high-end robot vacuum that offers many of the same features and stats of the Roomba line-up, but is quite a bit more expensive. Regarding cleaning performance, it captured 89% of debris from hardwoods, 99% from low pile carpet and 98% from high pile carpet. TheDyson V8is stick vacuum that offers a 40 minute run time, doubles as a 2-in-1 , and offers cordless convenience as you clean. It has a 0.54 L dust bin (about 40% larger than the Roomba dust bin) and weighs under 6 lbs. The robot vacuum weighs 5.22 pounds (2.4kg) and has a 0.4-liter dust bin capacity. Dyson has already launched several robotic vacuums in the past, although its bestsellers remain cordless handheld models.

So unless you run the robot vacuum when you’re not at home, it’s going to get in the way and could potentially be a tripping hazard. It’s a good idea, but the practicalities need to be considered. Spins at 78,000rpm, generating 20% more suction than the Dyson 360 Eye™ robot vacuum. Dyson also says the tech allows it to make lightweight vacuums. The “360” part suggests that the robot will follow in the 360 Eye’s rolling brush-steps by carrying a 360-degree vision system.

It proved reliable on carpet but pet hair did get tangled on the brushes. It was slower cleaning a whole room but did a good job, especially considering its price. Choose whether to use a remote, an app or voice control to instruct it. Stick vacuums have been popular because of their dyson robot vacuum lightweight and cordless mobility, which makes cleaning less of a hassle than schlepping an upright corded vacuum around. Generally, though, the sticks have served as a secondary cleaner to a full-size vacuum because of their short battery life and relatively weak suction.
