Upon his arrival in America, Schwinn quickly found work with the Hill Cycle Manufacturing Company and rose readily to the level of plant manager. He managed the plant for two years while he searched for the time, place and money to launch his own venture. This he found with the collaboration of another successful German immigrant, Adolf Arnold. According to Pridmore and Hurd, Arnold invested $75,000 in the venture, and Schwinn offered his expertise.
Though these are mechanical disc brakes, they offer superior stopping power compared to rim brakes. Schwinn has a phenomenal offer for beginner mountain bikers and casual riders who love the comfort and practicality of MTBs. Pacific Cycle bought what was left of this iconic American brand and started selling Schwinn models as “box store” bikes at Walmart, Target, and Toys R Us. Schwinn first responded to the new challenge by producing its own middleweight version of the “English racer”. The middleweight incorporated most of the features of the English racer, but had wider tires and wheels.
The company sells two bike lines; the first one uses the specialty shops to sell high-end models – known as the Signature Series. The other line features discount bikes that are available through platforms like K-Mart, Sears, and Wall-Mart. One is a range of discount bikes offered by mass-merchandisers such as Wal-Mart, Sears, and Kmart. The additional line, known as the Signature schwinn bicycles Series, featured on their website, are higher-end models marketed through specialty shops. Its bike lines include cruisers, road, hybrids, urban, kids, and electric. Once America’s preeminent bicycle manufacturer, the Schwinn brand, as with many other bicycle manufacturers, affixed itself to fabrication in China and Taiwan, fueling most of its corporate parent’s growth.
Three companies are based out of the small factory – Waterford Precision Bicycles, Gunnar Cycles USA and Fitmaster. Insult upon injury, Schwinn had gradually become a stale brand in the eyes of the youth market during the same period. While the Hollywood bike was ostensibly a budget-priced kid’s option, it was still built to be a workhorse—as was the Chicago way. With the semi-retired Ignaz Schwinn still keeping a close watch on things, Frank made some bold decisions that helped launch a second golden age not only for the Schwinn company, but the bike industry as a whole.
By 1960, all bike manufacturers only had annual sales of 4.4 million but Schwinn was enjoying a huge chunk of the cake. In the 50s, Schwinn changed its marketing strategy and became more aggressive when dealing with distributors; this was aimed at making the company a dominant force in the industry. Many big companies went bankrupt while the smaller ones were absorbed.
His ambitions were a tad too big for the old country, however, and in choosing his next move, he carefully calculated Chicago as the ideal destination. For all its associations with the 1950s and ‘60s, though, Schwinn’s mid-century heyday was really just an easy downhill glide after five decades of determined, non-stop pedaling. Crew-cutted Eisenhower kiddos had Schwinns on their Christmas lists because Schwinn was already the name their parents knew and respected.
The more expensive models from Schwinn are made from higher quality materials which will be able to endure higher levels of wear and tear so will last you longer. As we said, Schwinn bikes are not what they used to be before they got acquired by other companies after going bankrupt in 1992.
